Most of the time I have a idea for a title in my head and the visual idea comes with it. I see the colours and the layout in my head as well. Sometimes I have to make a few sketches to work out the idea further.
I make notes of little details in my book and do a lot of thinking. But once I stand in front of the canvas the picture does flows out of my hand.
In these pictures you can see how I created the painting 'Passing the time on St. Helena'.
I paint in layers to give the painting more volume and dept. The first layer is nice and wild and I can paint it quickly. After that the painting becomes more detailed and I spend a lot of time with a small brush painting eyes and other small things.
I love every minute of it and I often find it hard to leave the studio at the end of the day!
